Olympic Fever
I’ve never really been one to watch the Olympic games in all honestly, I found them boring as a child, I’d much rather have seen what Bugs Bunny was up to or tuned into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…you know, things with real passion eh? However, this year I actually sat down and watched the opening ceremonies, and from that moment on I was stuck on the Olympics.
I don’t know how many other people across Canada alone got the ‘Olympic fever’ but this year for some reason I got it bad. Every morning as I got ready for work I would turn on the TV to the same channel and the journalists would wake up with me. Every evening I’d come home from work or class and I’d tune in to see what events had taken place and what was going on that night. I’d receive texts from my Mom periodically each day updating me on our metal count and what races we’d won in. It was just something outside of my own little world of crazy school and work life that I could sit down, relax and be excited for…and it didn’t hurt that I could actually do school work while watching it (I mean really, I was mostly interested in the Canadian athletes, or on occasion those athletes they did those little pre-game life stories on), so during other athletes’ runs I’d read my textbook…you know how student life is.
I started looking forward every day to events I would watch in the evening and have people come over to watch anything really, curling, skating, and of course hockey! It didn’t really matter what we watched, we just loved seeing our athletes compete and really took pride in the metals won as though they were our own (I love living vicariously though athletes…makes me feel like I never have to go to the gym).
The day I found out that the Olympics were ending however a wave of sadness washed over me briefly, I thought to myself, who will wake up with me in the morning? How will I deal with the lack of texts from my Mom? How will I decide what to watch on those nights when there’s no good shows on TV? But I made it though, and although the closing ceremonies were emotional for me, I held to one thing…we kicked butt in both women’s and men’s hockey!

I got the fever this year too – perhaps because of the Olympic torch run across the country and purchasing the mittens to help the athletes. These things really helped put everyone in the mood and the COVERAGE ON TV was awesome!! I could get up any time of the day and find the Olympics (which I did)! Great athletes and great stories! I loved it all. Now back to work, BUT spring is right around the corner! I think I’ll have to add a trip to BC to my bucket list!
wow, I am going through SERIOUS withdrawals. Once Spring Break started, after a really hellish school week, I just plunked myself down and watched every event I could. I would get up in the morning, watch CTV online, and eat breakfast, and watch events all day while I marked lab reports. By the end of each day, my computer was so hot I thought I was killing it with constant CTV feed. I was most into the skating and hockey. The hockey games were so tense, my nerves were frayed the whole day leading up to each one. The last one especially, I thought I’d go crazy waiting for it. I watched the closing too, which was so sad…thinking about how boring school would seem after such an exciting and patriotic week. I’ve never heard Oh Canada so many times, or seen such rapid Facebook status changes. I’m so proud of Canada for stepping out of our quiet, modest selves and being LOUD AND PROUD!
Sigh. I wish the Olympics were every year.
Hahaha! I know, the whole thing was awesome I knew I couldn’t be the only one who went though this fever! I am totally going though olympic withdrawl now though! I think it helped that it was in our own back yard…it just added that special touch eh?
PS I am also going to have to plan a trip to BC…might actually be a warm destination in the winter compared to Ottawa lol
Allison,
I could not agree more! Your replies prove that Canada’s national pride and love of the olympics was the case for almost every Canadian! You could hear echoes of screaming in my appartment building when the final Canada/USA hockey game was on! Canada has a lot to be proud about, and not just owning the gold podium.
In addition, it occured at the right time. I was on my reading week so I only procrastinated work for a little over a week. My slightly off midterm marks are presently being blamed on the Olympics.
Keep up the great blogs! I always relate with ‘em! they are pure GOLD!
Haha I’m glad there was so much passion during the weeks of Olympicness, I honestly also wish they were every year…but only in Canada lol. I told my boyfriend I thought they should just keep them going year round but he said we’d run out of athletes…so…anyone up for the challenge?
PS Canada also rocked my socks waaaay off with it’s patriotism…I’m pretty sure every other person I saw outside was sporting those lovely red mittens!
